Like two 74251 sections also in this catalog combined in one chip, each of its two 8-to-1 multiplexers independently selects one of eight data inputs based on the shared 3-bit address, letting a design route two separate 8-way data selections using the same address lines — useful for dual-channel bus selection applications.

Compared to using two separate 74251 chips also in this catalog, this dual-section part shares address lines between both multiplexers, saving pins in designs needing to route two data words through the same selection logic.
