Z8420APS Z80 PIO Parallel Input/Output Controller (Zilog)

The Z8420APS (Zilog) is the Z80 Parallel Input/Output (PIO) controller, a peripheral IC that provides two independent 8-bit parallel I/O ports for a Z80-based system.

Z8420 – How It Works

Each of its two 8-bit ports can be independently configured for byte-oriented input, output, or bidirectional/bit-control modes, with built-in handshaking signals to coordinate data transfer with external devices — a standard building block for connecting printers, keyboards, and other parallel peripherals to classic Z80 computer systems.

Together with the Z80A CTC also in this catalog, the Z80 PIO formed one of the two most commonly used support chips in classic Z80-based home computers and embedded controllers of the late 1970s and 1980s.
