The PC817 is one of the most widely-used optocoupler ICs — an LED and phototransistor combined in one DIP-4 package to transfer a signal across an electrically isolated barrier using light.

PC817 – How It Works

Current through the internal LED generates light that the phototransistor detects and converts back into an output current, letting a signal pass between two circuits — commonly one at mains/high voltage and one at low-voltage logic level — with no direct electrical connection, protecting sensitive logic circuits from voltage spikes and providing safety isolation.

It’s the go-to general-purpose optocoupler in countless power supply and safety-isolation designs, playing the same fundamental role as the MB10414 also in this catalog but in an even more commonly stocked, widely second-sourced part number.
