The 7499 is an 8-bit universal shift/storage register IC, a more capable and flexible sibling to the 4-bit 7495 also in this catalog.

7499 – How It Works

It supports multiple operating modes including serial shift (left or right), parallel load, and hold (storage) — the “universal” designation reflects its ability to be configured for a wide range of shift-register applications from a single chip, doubling the bit width of the 7495 for handling byte-wide data.

Its 8-bit width makes it a natural match for byte-oriented data paths, where the 4-bit 7495 also in this catalog would need two chips paired together to handle the same data width.
