4522 Programmable Divide-by-N 4-Bit BCD Counter (CMOS)

The 4522 is a programmable divide-by-N BCD (0-9) counter IC in the CMOS 4000-series family, generating an output pulse after counting a programmable number of input clock cycles.

4522 – How It Works

Unlike a fixed divide-by-10 decade counter, its “programmable” preset inputs let a designer set any division ratio from 1 to 9 externally, making it a flexible building block for generating custom clock division ratios or timing intervals without needing a microcontroller.

Compared to the fixed 24-stage 4521 also in this catalog, its programmable BCD division ratio makes it better suited to applications needing an adjustable or non-power-of-2 division ratio rather than fixed long-interval division.
