40160 Decade Counter with Asynchronous Clear (DIP)

The 40160 is a synchronous decade (BCD, 0-9) counter IC with an asynchronous clear input, part of the 40160/40161/40162/40163 family of CMOS synchronous counters.

40160 – How It Works

It counts through the decimal digits 0 through 9 (rather than the full binary 0-15 range of a 4-bit counter), rolling over back to zero after 9, with all outputs changing synchronously on the clock edge, and the asynchronous clear input can reset the count to zero at any time regardless of the clock.

Because it counts in true BCD (0-9) rather than full 4-bit binary (0-15) like the 74161 also in this catalog, it’s the more natural choice for driving a decimal digit display directly without extra conversion logic.
