The TMS9929A (Texas Instruments) is a video display processor (VDP) IC for PAL video systems, forming the interface between a microprocessor, video RAM, and a color video monitor.

TMS9929A – How It Works

Functionally identical to the TMS9918A but with the NTSC color encoding circuitry replaced by luminance/color-difference output signals for 625-line PAL video systems, it manages three interfaces (CPU, video RAM, and color monitor) to generate the video image — famously used in 1980s home computers and game consoles like the ColecoVision, MSX systems, and the TI-99/4A.

It’s a genuinely important chip for retro computing restoration in PAL-broadcast regions specifically, since the NTSC-only TMS9918A won’t produce a compatible video signal for PAL monitors and TVs.
