How It Works

The uPD7201 provides two fully independent serial channels, each capable of running a different communication protocol at the same time — including HDLC (the ISO standard), SDLC (IBM’s protocol), and Binary Synchronous Communication (BSC). A host microprocessor configures each channel’s mode, baud rate, and protocol through internal control registers, and the chip then handles the low-level framing, synchronization, and bit-level protocol work in hardware, freeing the host CPU from that overhead. This made it a common serial I/O building block in 1980s computer systems that needed RS-232 or similar serial ports.
