The M58480 (Mitsubishi) is a 30-function infrared remote-control transmitter encoder IC, converting button presses into the coded infrared signal pattern a receiver decodes to identify which command was sent.

M58480 – How It Works

It scans a matrix of up to 30 buttons, and when one is pressed, generates a unique digital code that modulates an infrared LED — the receiving equipment recognizes that specific code pattern and executes the corresponding function (volume up, channel change, etc.).

A remote control where some buttons work and others don’t (rather than the whole remote failing) is a classic symptom that points to a partial fault in this encoder chip’s button-matrix scanning logic.
