The 74174 is a hex D-type flip-flop IC — six independent D-type flip-flops in one chip, each capturing its data input on the rising clock edge, plus a common asynchronous clear.

74174 – How It Works

On each rising clock edge, every flip-flop’s output takes on whatever logic level was present at its D input just before the edge, effectively “storing” six bits of data simultaneously — a common building block for data latches, shift registers, and simple memory elements in digital logic designs.

Its six-bits-at-once storage makes it a natural match for byte-oriented or word-oriented data paths, complementing the individual/dual flip-flop chips like the 74109 also in this catalog used when fewer, independently-controlled bits are needed.
