The ULN2003 Stepper Driver Board is the companion interface board that lets a microcontroller drive a 28BYJ-48 (or similar low-current unipolar) stepper motor’s coils in the correct energizing sequence.

ULN2003 Driver – How It Works

The board is built around the ULN2003 chip, which packs seven Darlington transistor pairs capable of switching up to 500mA each, far more current than a microcontroller’s GPIO pins can safely supply directly to a motor coil. A microcontroller sends simple HIGH/LOW signals on four input pins (IN1-IN4), and the ULN2003 amplifies each into enough current to energize the corresponding stepper coil, cycling through the four inputs in the right pattern to spin the motor forward or backward one step at a time. Built-in protection diodes on the board absorb the voltage spikes generated when each coil switches off, protecting both the ULN2003 chip and the connected microcontroller from damage that unprotected inductive switching would otherwise cause.

Because this board is sized for low-current unipolar steppers like the 28BYJ-48, it is not suitable for larger NEMA17-class bipolar steppers, which need a dedicated bipolar driver like an A4988 or DRV8825 instead. The board is inexpensive and widely available, so it’s common to keep a spare on hand for classroom or workshop settings where students frequently wire up their first stepper motor project and occasionally reverse a connector by mistake.
