UT502A insulation tester – How It Works

At its top 2500V test voltage, it measures insulation resistance from 0.01MΩ up to 20GΩ with accuracy tiers that tighten at lower ranges, and its Polarization Index (PI) and Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR) modes assess insulation health over time rather than a single snapshot reading – useful for evaluating motor windings or transformers where insulation condition matters more than a pass/fail number. An auto-discharge function safely bleeds off residual voltage after a high-voltage test.

CAT IV 600V / CAT III 1000V overload protection to IEC 61010-1 standards makes it safe to use on demanding industrial circuits, not just light residential testing.

Safe Testing Practice

Always confirm the circuit is fully de-energized and isolated before applying a test voltage, because insulation testers deliberately output high voltage and connecting one to a live circuit is dangerous to both the operator and the instrument. Discharge the tested equipment afterwards, since cables and windings can hold a charge long enough to deliver a shock minutes later.

Disconnect sensitive electronics from the circuit before testing, as the applied test voltage can damage semiconductors and surge protection devices that were never designed to see it.
