Z8430AB1 Z80A CTC Counter Timer Circuit (SGS)

The Z8430AB1 (SGS, second-source of the Zilog Z80A CTC) is a Counter/Timer Circuit peripheral built to work alongside the Z80 microprocessor, providing four independent programmable counter/timer channels.

Z8430 – How It Works

Each of its four channels can be configured as either a counter (counting external events) or a timer (dividing down the system clock), and each can generate an interrupt to the Z80 CPU when it reaches zero — commonly used for baud-rate generation, real-time clock ticks, and event counting in classic Z80-based computer and industrial control designs.

Being an SGS-manufactured second source rather than a genuine Zilog part, it’s pin- and function-compatible with the original Z80A CTC, making it a valid drop-in replacement in any design built around the standard Z80 peripheral family.
