LM3900 Quad Norton (Current-Differencing) Amplifier

The LM3900 is a quad Norton (current-differencing) amplifier IC, four independent amplifiers that respond to input current differences rather than voltage differences like a conventional op-amp.

LM3900 – How It Works

Unlike a standard voltage-mode op-amp, each Norton amplifier compares the currents flowing into its two inputs rather than their voltages, a design that simplifies single-supply operation and certain oscillator/filter circuit topologies, though it requires a different design approach than conventional voltage-feedback op-amps.

Its current-differencing input structure is fundamentally different from a voltage-mode op-amp like the LM324 also in this catalog — circuits designed for one type generally cannot be directly substituted with the other.
