The LM317 is one of the most famous and widely used adjustable linear voltage regulators ever made — set its output to any voltage from about 1.25V up to 37V using just two resistors.

LM317 – How It Works

It maintains a constant 1.25V reference between its Output and Adjust pins, and a resistor divider connected to the Adjust pin sets exactly how much that reference gets multiplied up to determine the final output voltage — a simple, elegant design that made it a standard building block in countless power supply circuits.

Its simple two-resistor voltage-setting formula (Vout = 1.25V × (1 + R2/R1)) is one of the first practical circuits taught to electronics students, and it remains a go-to part for any project needing a custom, non-standard voltage.
