The Ethernet Shield W5100 stacks directly on top of an Arduino Uno or Mega and adds a full wired network stack via the Wiznet W5100 chip, which is the reason this shield remains popular for projects that need a reliable, latency-predictable connection instead of WiFi.

Ethernet Shield W5100 – Core Specs

The W5100 chip provides a hardware TCP/IP stack supporting ICMP, TCP, UDP, IGMP, PPPoE, IPv4 ARP and Ethernet, with up to 4 simultaneous socket connections — enough for a small web server plus a couple of outbound client connections at once. A standard RJ45 jack handles the physical connection, and an onboard microSD slot lets the same shield serve files over the network. Communication with the host Arduino runs over SPI on pins 11-13 on an Uno or 50-52 on a Mega, with pin 10 selecting the W5100 and pin 4 selecting the SD card, and status LEDs show power, link, duplex and speed at a glance.
