74169 Synchronous 4-Bit Up/Down Binary Counter

The 74169 is a synchronous 4-bit up/down binary counter IC, using a single up/down control input to select counting direction rather than the separate clock pins found on the 74193 also in this catalog.

74169 – How It Works

All four output bits change synchronously on the rising clock edge, with the up/down control input determining whether the count increments or decrements, and a count-enable input allowing the counter to be paused without disrupting the current count value — a slightly different control scheme than the 74193 for the same fundamental up/down counting function.

Its single up/down control pin (versus the 74193’s separate up and down clock inputs also in this catalog) simplifies control logic in designs where a single direction signal is more convenient than two separate clock lines.
