74147 10-to-4 Line Priority Encoder

The 74147 is a 10-to-4 line priority encoder IC, converting an active-low decimal input (one of ten lines) into a 4-bit BCD binary code, with priority logic for handling multiple simultaneous inputs.

74147 – How It Works

Unlike a decoder (which does the opposite operation), it performs the reverse function of the 74145 also in this catalog — if more than one input is active simultaneously, its priority logic outputs the code for whichever active input has the highest numerical value, ignoring lower-priority active inputs, making it a standard building block for keypad and switch-matrix encoding.

It performs the exact inverse operation of the 74145 decoder also in this catalog — while the 74145 converts BCD to one-of-ten, this chip converts one-of-ten (or multiple) back into a BCD code.
