UT343E coating thickness gauge – How It Works

It measures both ferrous and non-ferrous coatings, and adds conductive coating measurement (chromium, zinc, tin) that its A and D siblings don’t cover. Its Bluetooth app streams readings to a phone or PC for analysis, and a voice broadcast feature reads the measurement aloud – useful when your eyes are on the probe rather than the screen.

Getting Consistent Readings

Apply couplant generously between the probe and the surface when using an ultrasonic gauge, because an air gap blocks the sound pulse the measurement depends on and produces either no reading or a wildly wrong one. Prepare rough or painted surfaces before measuring, since coatings and corrosion both affect what the instrument reports.

Calibrate against a known-thickness reference block of the same material before a measurement session, as sound velocity differs between materials and the gauge assumes the value it has been set to. Take several readings around each point and treat the consistent cluster as the real value rather than a single outlier.
