Pressing the plunger down compresses an internal spring until it clicks and locks in place, at which point the tool is primed and ready; heating the solder joint with a soldering iron until the solder turns fully liquid and shiny, then quickly positioning the pump’s heat-resistant nozzle tip right at the molten solder and pressing the release trigger, fires the plunger back under spring tension and creates a sudden vacuum that sucks the liquid solder up into the pump’s barrel, clearing the joint. Timing matters more than force here: the solder needs to still be fully molten the instant the trigger fires, since a joint that’s begun to cool and stiffen won’t be pulled up cleanly even with a perfectly working pump.
