The 54393 is a dual 4-bit binary ripple counter IC, the military/industrial-temperature version of the standard 74393 logic chip, two independent 4-bit counters in one package.

54393 – How It Works

Unlike the synchronous 74161/74163 counters also in this catalog, each of its two sections is a ripple counter, where each bit toggles based on the previous bit’s output rather than all bits changing simultaneously on the clock — simpler in design but with a small cumulative propagation delay across the bits.

When timing precision matters and the small ripple delay across bits is unacceptable, the synchronous 74161/74163 counters also in this catalog are the better choice over this ripple-counter design.
