4N25 optocoupler

The 4N25 is a 6-pin optocoupler combining a GaAs infrared LED with a silicon NPN phototransistor, providing 5000V electrical isolation between input and output circuits.

How It Works

The 4N25’s infrared LED (pins 1-2) and phototransistor (pins 4-6) sit inside one package but share no electrical connection — only light. When current flows through the LED, it emits infrared light that strikes the phototransistor’s base region, turning it on and closing an electrical path between its collector and emitter. This lets a signal cross from one circuit to a completely separate circuit (often at a different voltage or ground reference) with a rated isolation of 5000V, and a rise/fall time of about 2 microseconds.
