A light-sensitive component inside the photocell continuously monitors ambient light levels, and once that level drops below a preset threshold at dusk, an internal relay closes to complete the circuit and power the connected light. Because the same relay opens again once ambient light rises past that threshold at dawn, the whole cycle repeats automatically every day without anyone needing to reset a timer for seasonal daylight changes. In addition, since the sensor is rated for 220V at 10A, it directly switches typical outdoor light fixtures without needing a separate contactor for moderate loads.
