MCP2515 CAN Bus Controller Module

The MCP2515 CAN Bus Controller Module gives a microcontroller access to the Controller Area Network protocol used throughout automotive, industrial and agricultural equipment, pairing Microchip’s MCP2515 CAN controller chip with a TJA1050 transceiver on one breakout board.

MCP2515 – How It Works

The MCP2515 chip itself implements the CAN 2.0B specification and talks to the host microcontroller over SPI, handling standard and extended frames, message filtering through two acceptance masks and six acceptance filters, and error handling in hardware rather than requiring the host to bit-bang the CAN protocol in software. The TJA1050 transceiver converts the MCP2515’s logic-level CAN signals into the differential CAN-H/CAN-L voltage levels the physical bus actually uses, and a 120Ω termination jumper lets the module act as a proper bus-terminating node when needed. It supports CAN speeds up to 1Mbps, with 3 transmit and 2 receive buffers letting it handle multiple in-flight messages without the host constantly babysitting the bus.

Because CAN is a differential, terminated bus protocol, connecting to a vehicle’s live CAN network requires care and correct wiring, since an incorrectly wired node can genuinely disrupt the vehicle’s own onboard electronic systems entirely.

Because CAN allows many nodes to share one bus, this module also works well for building a custom multi-sensor network across a workshop rather than running separate wires back to a central controller.
