The CD4054 is a 4-segment LCD display driver IC in the CMOS 4000-series family, providing the AC drive signals needed to properly power liquid-crystal display segments.

CD4054 – How It Works

Unlike LED segment driving which uses simple DC current, LCD segments specifically require an AC drive waveform (to prevent damaging DC bias buildup in the liquid crystal material), so this chip generates the correct phase-shifted AC signals for each of its 4 segment outputs relative to a common backplane signal.

Never drive LCD segments with plain DC logic outputs designed for LEDs — the DC bias will permanently damage the liquid crystal material over time, which is exactly the problem this dedicated AC-drive chip solves.
