RC522 RFID Kit – Core Specs

The MFRC522 chip operates at 13.56MHz and supports the ISO/IEC 14443 Type A protocol family, including MIFARE Classic cards like the included S50 tag, communicating with a host microcontroller over SPI at up to 10Mbps (I2C and UART are supported by the chip but SPI is what most Arduino libraries use by default). Read range runs roughly 0-60mm depending on the tag and antenna tuning, and the module operates from a 2.5-3.3V supply, so a 5V Arduino needs level-shifted SPI lines or a 3.3V logic host like an ESP32 or STM32 to avoid damaging the chip.

Specifications are sourced from Elprocus’s RC522 RFID module reference. Because the module is strictly 3.3V, connecting its SPI lines directly to a 5V Arduino’s pins without a level shifter risks damaging the reader permanently over repeated use.

Having two identical readers in the kit also means a two-door or entry/exit access system can be designed, built and tested end to end without waiting for a second identical module to arrive separately, days or sometimes even weeks later on down the line.
