DS3231 RTC Module

The DS3231 RTC module solves a problem plain Arduino boards can’t handle alone: keeping accurate wall-clock time across power cycles and resets. Unlike a basic RTC chip relying on an external crystal, the DS3231 integrates a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) directly on the chip.

DS3231 – How It Works

That integrated TCXO is what gives the DS3231 its headline accuracy: roughly ±2 minutes of drift per year, or ±3.5ppm across -40°C to +85°C, which is dramatically tighter than the cheaper DS1307 modules that drift by minutes per month. It communicates over I2C, tracks seconds through year with automatic leap-year correction, and includes two programmable alarms plus a 32.768kHz output pin. A backup coin-cell battery keeps the clock running through power loss, and the chip also has a built-in temperature sensor as a side benefit of the compensation circuitry.

Specifications are sourced from Analog Devices’ official DS3231 datasheet. Because it’s a drop-in I2C upgrade over the DS1307, most existing RTC libraries and wiring diagrams for the older chip apply directly with only the library’s device name changed in the code.

Keeping the backup coin cell fresh matters more than it might seem, since a dead backup battery means the clock silently resets to its default time every single time main power gets disconnected, even briefly.

Because the module exposes its own onboard temperature reading over the same I2C bus, a project can get a rough ambient temperature value without adding a second dedicated sensor at all.
