This 10µF, 100V electrolytic capacitor is a polarized aluminum electrolytic capacitor suited to general-purpose coupling, decoupling, and small power-supply filtering.

How It Works

Unlike ceramic capacitors, an electrolytic capacitor uses a chemically-formed oxide layer as its dielectric, allowing it to pack a relatively large capacitance value (10µF) into a compact cylindrical package. It is polarized — the negative lead (marked with a stripe) must never be connected to a higher voltage than the positive lead, or the capacitor can overheat, vent, or fail. Its 100V voltage rating is the maximum DC voltage it can safely withstand; always leave headroom and avoid running it at or above this rating in a live circuit.
