9V Battery Cap – How It Works

The cap snaps onto the two terminals of a 9V battery, and its red and black leads carry positive and negative to the circuit. Because the snap only fits the battery one way and the leads are colour coded, it removes the risk of reversed polarity that comes with improvised wiring, and the open wire ends can be soldered, screwed into a terminal, or fitted with a plug.

Getting the Most From Them

Avoid mixing old and new cells, or different brands and chemistries, in the same device, because the weaker cells get driven hard by the stronger ones and that is what usually causes a battery to leak inside a device. Replace the whole set at once rather than swapping one cell at a time.
