The ARCTIC MX-4 Thermal Compound is a ARCTIC thermal compound (4g syringe), applied between a CPU, GPU, or power component and its heatsink to fill the microscopic air gaps left by even the flattest-looking metal surfaces. As a result, heat transfers into the heatsink far more efficiently than it would across bare metal alone.

ARCTIC MX-4 Thermal Compound – How It Works

Under magnification, both a CPU’s heat-spreader and a heatsink’s base are covered in tiny surface irregularities that trap air, and because air conducts heat poorly, that trapped air normally blocks a large share of the heat from ever reaching the heatsink. This ARCTIC compound displaces that air by flowing into every microscopic gap, giving heat a continuous, thermally conductive path from the chip straight into the heatsink’s metal. In addition, since applying too much paste can trap air bubbles just as effectively as applying none, spreading a thin, even layer is what actually delivers the lower temperatures this compound is capable of.

Thermal compounds in this class are formulated similarly to reference products documented by ARCTIC. Clean off any old, dried-out paste with isopropyl alcohol before applying a fresh layer, because old compound left underneath a new layer traps air just as badly as no paste at all.
