The 74161 is a synchronous 4-bit binary counter IC with a direct (asynchronous) reset input, counting from 0 to 15 and rolling over, commonly used to build digital timing and sequencing circuits.

74161 – How It Works

All four output bits change synchronously together on the rising clock edge (unlike a ripple counter, avoiding glitches from cascaded propagation delays), and the direct reset input immediately clears the counter to zero regardless of the clock state — a standard, cascadable building block for digital counting applications.

It differs from the similar 74163 also in this catalog mainly in its reset behavior — the 74161 resets asynchronously (immediately, regardless of the clock) while the 74163 resets synchronously (only on the next clock edge), a distinction that matters in precise timing designs.
