Second HDD Caddy

Second HDD Caddy

The Second HDD Caddy is a 2.5-inch (laptop bay) SATA hard drive enclosure with a SATA (internal caddy) interface, replacing a laptop’s optical drive with a second drive bay, turning a bare internal HDD or SSD into a portable external USB drive.

Second HDD Caddy – How It Works

A bare 2.5-inch SATA drive (either a spinning hard disk or a solid-state drive) slides into the enclosure’s internal SATA connector, and a bridge chip inside the enclosure translates between the drive’s SATA protocol and the SATA (internal caddy) connection presented to the computer, so the operating system sees a standard external USB drive rather than needing any special drive-specific software. Because SATA (internal caddy) offers substantially more bandwidth than the older USB 2.0 standard, drives in this enclosure (especially SSDs) can transfer data at speeds meaningfully faster than an older external drive, with the enclosure fully backward-compatible with USB 2.0 ports for connecting to older computers, just at reduced speed. The tool-free design most enclosures in this class use lets a drive be installed or swapped without screws or special tools, and no external power adapter is needed since the drive draws power directly through the USB connection itself.

Key Features

• Fits: 2.5-inch (laptop bay) SATA drives (HDD/SSD)
• Interface: SATA (internal caddy)
• Tool-free drive installation
• Bus-powered, no separate adapter needed

Typical Applications

• Turning a spare internal drive into external storage
• Backup and file transfer storage
• Recovering data from an old laptop’s drive

Specifications

• Drive size: 2.5-inch (laptop bay)
• Interface: SATA (internal caddy)
• Installation: tool-free

Specifications are sourced from standard 2.5-inch SATA HDD/SSD USB enclosure documentation. Because achieving the full rated transfer speed needs a matching USB port on the computer, plug into a USB 3.0 (often blue-lined) port rather than an older USB 2.0 port to get the enclosure’s full performance.

Second HDD Caddy

Second HDD Caddy –

SATA 2.5-inch (laptop bay) (HDD/SSD)
SATA (internal caddy)

2.5-inch (laptop bay)
SATA (internal caddy)
