IP5407 Power Bank Module – How It Works

The IP5407 chip manages both the charging side and the boost-converter output side from a single integrated circuit, charging one or more connected 18650 cells through whichever input port is used (Micro USB or the newer, reversible USB-C connector) and simultaneously handling the boost conversion needed to deliver a stable 5V from the cell’s 3.0-4.2V range. Its dual USB output ports each support up to 2.4A, and combined with the chip’s built-in load detection, the module can automatically sense when a device is plugged in and switch on the boost output, then switch it back off automatically once the connected device is unplugged or fully charged, avoiding the standby power drain a simpler always-on boost circuit would have. Standard overcharge, over-discharge and overcurrent protection round out the design, making it a complete, modern power bank core needing only a battery holder, enclosure and cells to become a finished product.
